Have you considered home schooling your kids more now than in the past?

Chanda Wittwer: I think so yeah I'm not a parent just someone whom was homeschooled (cyber school) thru highschool I'm happy my mom did it because I'm in philly a pretty bad neighborhood and I would have ended up pregnant or in jail ahahah I'm easliy influenced and kids are up to no good now of days only thing is the lack of friends and no prom boooo.

Ronnie Sardi: Ugh no! I was homeschooled because my parents were afraid of such things, and it was the most miserable 8 years of my life! Never ever will I consider homeschooling.

Tana Dumoulin: None of these hazards are new. And half of them are avoidable by providing your own lunch, living up to your own standards and teaching your child how to handle confrontation.Putting kids in a bubble won't keep them safe. These dangers are everywhere...not just at school. You have to teach your kids to live in the world we live in, and thrive despite it's ugliness, not hide from it....Show more

Berry Gilmore: No.! I still love our local school system, the teachers, and their standards. Oh and their lunches rock, although my kids rarely eat at school because I think it's silly to pay for it when I can provide perfectly healthy lunches on my own.The rate of sexual predator teachers hasn't gone up, the reporting just has. I'm not saying it's not a concern, just that it's not on the rise. We just hear about it more now. Home schooling has its time and place, but for us personally it would be a less beneficial education and socialization than public school....Show more

Ginny Trickett: Nope. Are you saying that any of these things are new? Or that most of them are common? (School shootings make the headlines for weeks because they ARE rare.)School lunch standards are generally better than they were in the past, and I have no idea what you are saying about lowered grade standards. I graduated high school 35 years ago. And there was a teacher in my high school who was fir! ed for having a relationship with a student. I usually packed! a lunch because the school lunches were awful. Bullying happened every day.My daughter has friends who are/were home schooled, for various reasons, and they have done well. (And in US home-schooled students CAN get into universities.). But it wasn't something that I ever wanted to do, or saw the need for. We have very good schools in our community, and daughter got a better education at public school than I could have given her....Show more

Carolynn Testani: I am a mom of four and my children are, and always have been, homeschooled. It is not for everyone, but it works for us!It was one of the tragic incidents you mention (Columbine) that first made me consider homeschooling and start researching it, but it is not WHY we homeschool. It was what I found during that research.EDITED TO ADD: Homeschoolers in the UK most certainly can, and do, go to university....Show more

Mayola Sylva: I am more committed to homeschooling. I have been homeschooling my kinderg! artner and now I am more committed to keeping it up for at least for another couple of years. We decided to use kindergarten as the trial year. But my choice has nothing to do with shootings or such. My choice has more to do with the availability of materials and other teaching helpers. I am just starting to scratch the surface of the low cost or free materials available due to the internet, growth of homeschooling and smart phones. Homeschooling just a few years ago would have been more difficult.I am homeschooling so that I tailor lessons specifically for the needs of my child. If we had the money to do private school, that might be our choice. But homeschooling at least at this point is a cost effective way to give my child the level of education I think she needs....Show more

Olin Hallin: No.Homeschooling damages children in many ways.In the UK, you cannot get into university if you are homeschooled, as you do not have any qualifications. It is much, much har! der, and you may never get in. Getting a job can also be much harder as! you do not have school qualification. Also, the social life of the child and confidence are crushed; less friends are made, they cannot go to prom or do anything normal students do, and they lack skills in this area.Personally, as a very well educated woman, I would NEVER homeschool ANY children....Show more

Armando Somes: I have thought about it, especially the day the Sandy Hook shooting happened. However, I refuse to live my life in fear over things that could happen. My husband and I talked to our kids preschool and they assured us their security was good. We we went to check out the private school we are sending our daughter to next year we felt she would be safe there. We had to be buzzed into the building, and the sectary had to check our ID's, and we were walked to the Principal's office for the tour. The teachers at the school have at least a MAster's degree, ans on standardized test the students score 1-2 grades above the state average. The class size i! s about 1 teacher to every 15 students, and their lunch program is very good, plus we have the option of bringing their lunch from home. They ban soda and vending machines.Taking everything into account we think sending them to a private school is better. the public schools where I live are bad....Show more

Ninfa Asby: I went to both home school and public school as a child, and having experienced both, I do plan to home school my children. Not for any of the reasons you have suggest though. Yeah, there are some pretty nasty things out there, but I won't allow fear to rule my life. I am choosing to home school my children because I think it's best for our family. I know it isn't right for everyone, but it is for us.

Ardell Luy: Absolutely never.Homeschooling is a deficient education and should be illegal.A parent's job is not to protect kids from life. The job is to teach kids how to handle it.How is a kid supposed to learn how to defend themselves from bullies a! t work or in the neighborhood if they are never exposed to them?...Show! more

Hal Rouse: No, I've never considered teaching my son. He's just about to take his exams, in Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry, French, Computing. I'd maybe manage to teach him English and Computing, probably not up to exam level though, and the rest, I wouldn't have a clue. Unless you're very well qualified in all of their subjects, how can you possibly teach them? Qualified teachers don't even teach every subject. And. even being qualified in the subjects isn't enough, or teachers wouldn't have to do teacher training after they get their degree in their chosen subject....Show more
