Chi Alfero: In addition to the BPA and phthalates already mentioned, plastic toys without those may be a problem for kids. We don't always know how safe the replacements for the latest problem ingredient will be in the long run.In general, I wouldn't describe plastic toys as green for anything. They can certainly be fun, but not green....Show more
Stevie Kizziar: Plastic uses up petroleom, a vital resource
Lu Snide: NL1031 starts with some good info, but fails in the end because unfortunately most children's toys are not recycled. Some are reused, but most end up in landfills, & plastic pieces can get into waterways. Also, babies & very young children tend to put their toys in their mouths. We don't really know how this constant sucking & chewing on plastic affects young, growing bodies. Soft, pliable plastics are made with pthalates & BPA, which animal studies have shown to be hormone distruptors. Could kids chewing on plastic teethers since the 1950s & '60s b! e why there's a higher incidence of fertility problems in baby-boomers? We just don't know. No-one has done long-term, large-scale studies on humans... other than how we're living today!...Show more
Isreal Kochheiser: Plastic toys are bad for the environment because once the toy breaks or it gets thrown in the trash it will take years for it to decompose and all the plastic in the soil harms plants and animals. Animals die by eating the toy or the plant can't grow due to the plastic or metal polluting the soil. A toy that is made of fabric will be good for the environment and kids. hope this information helps u....Show more
Mandy Mustaro: or are good for the environment?
Jene Licausi: What do you mean be "green for babies"? All plastic is bad for the environment because it takes from hundreds to hundred of thousands of years to decompose. Much of the trash ends up in the oceans, forcing local species to move. The pacific gyre is an area in the northe! rn pacific between the major ocean currents that turns and tra! sh collects there. THe areas is roughly 3-4 times the size of texas and completely full of trash. At first glance it doesn't look that bad, but plastic can be roughly the density of the water an float deep below the surface. After conducting tests, scientist found tiny ground up pellets of plastic in high concentration throughout the gyre. In addition to simply making the ocean too trashy for life, plastics can also leak chemicals into the water and change the pH. We, being at the top of the food chain, are not spared from the trash. Small animals ingest the plastic. fish eat those animals. Larger fish eat the smaller fish. An we eat those fish. Plastic trash in the oceans is just one of the many pollutants that are being leaked into the oceans at a catastrophically high rate each year. The oceans, even though we don;t live in them, are vital to our survival. a good fraction of the earth s population is fed off of fish. we divert the water for agriculture. We use the salt. ! And, rain comes from the water. Now if the plastic were on land, it might take longer to decompose, but would be less catastrophic. on land, trash looks ugly. Plastic can harm animals that will try to eat it or use it for nests or get caught in it. Then there's the risk that it is eventually washed into the ocean. The manufacturing of plastic is also harmful to the environment. It also made from fossil fuels/petroleum which is of course not good for the environment. The process releases CO2 and other byproducts into the environment and he increasing demand for plastic increases the amount of drilling that we do and the amount of gasoline available, which we will also burn. But we can't live with out plastic. A child's toy isn't going to seriously harm the environment unless you throw it into the ocean or something. Children's toys are generally passed on, and when their life is over, are usually recycled....Show more
